Born January 14, 1932 in Ribeira Grande Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, he immigrated to Canada in 1956 and sponsored his loved ones to come to Canada the following years. He married his wife, Fernanda in 1967, and they were blessed with 56 years of marriage filled with love, family, and happiness.
Jan was a devoted father to his three sons and daughter in laws, Alex (Sandra), David, and Mark (Dora). He took great joy in being a grandfather (Avô) to his grandchildren: Matthew (Namika), Christopher (Ashlee), Madelyn, Alyssa, Zachary, and Adam. Jan was so lucky to be a loving great-grandfather to his amazing great-grandchildren: Jayden, Callahan, Reya, Hayes, Vanessa, and Georgia. He loved spending time with his family. His infectious smile and warm welcoming personality will forever be remembered by family and all who knew him.
Jan took great pride in making his wine. His friends and family always looked forward to trying his latest vintage. Many good stories, good laughs, and good times were spent with friends in his wine room. Jan will always be remembered as a hard worker, always wanting to help others with any work they needed done. He saw the good in everyone and everything, cherishing life to its fullest no matter the circumstance.
Jan’s legacy will live on through his family, always being remembered as someone who enjoyed the simple things: good company and a glass of wine. As Jan would often say, life is so beautiful and everything is ‘Fantastic’.
A special thank you to all of the staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital for providing such compassionate care in the last few months of Jan’s life.
