It is with great sadness and profound peace that we share the passing of Henry Bertrand. He chose to be with his wife Joan through Medical Assistance in Dying on Nov 4, 2022. Henry passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving daughters, Joanne (Al) Herman, Michelle (Joe) Szauer, and Jacqueline (David) Nikolejsin.
Henry lived life to the fullest. He was known as the person you could always count on. Henry would give you the shirt off his back and expect nothing in return. He was born in Fir Mountain Sask. on the family farm into a family of 13 children. Henry’s father passed away when he was 17 years old, so Henry took over the family farm. He farmed in the summer and worked in BC in the winter to ensure all of his siblings got the schooling they wanted and that his mother would be well looked after. In 1952 Henry met Joan Holmberg at a dance and it was love at first sight. Joan was the love of Henry’s life, and they were married for 65 wonderful years, until Joan’s passing December 25, 2018.
Henry was a hard worker. He worked in the mining and forestry industries but made his career with the City of Victoria. Henry worked in the Water Works department for 32 years and was quite proud that he was retired for more years than he actually worked!
Henry taught us the value of being appreciative. There were so many that made positive contributions to Henry during his time with us, and he would like to thank the Berwick Royal Oak for all they did for him, and a very special thank you to his family physician, Dr. Dyane McLurg.
Henry leaves behind his 3 daughters, Joanne, Michelle, and Jacqueline, 7 grand children: Jason and Jennifer (James), Matthew and Jordan (Jill), and Alison (Simon), Jocelyn (Kyle) and Kristen (Kain). Henry also has 5 great grand children: Tynan and Nicole, Elliot and Nixon, and Eli. Henry always said his grandkids and great grandkids were the absolute joy of his life! Henry leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and strength that all of us will cherish. He was an example and an inspiration.
Please join us at a celebration of Henry’s life at First Memorial, 4725 Falaise Drive, on Nov 8th at 2:00. In lieu of flowers please donate to Victoria Hospice on Henry’s behalf.
