

He was born on December 9, 1946, in Pietrapertosa, Potenza, Italy.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Mazza, children Joseph (Erin), Michael (Amie), and Victoria (Tyrone), and 7 grandchildren - Julia, Lucas, Sofia, Alma, Ferris, Roscoe, Marlow. He is also survived by his sister Maria Mazza. He was predeceased by his father Carmine, mother Filomena, daughter Stephanie, and two brothers, Antonio and Pasquale.
A man of great character and integrity, Joe could light-up a room with his smile and laughter and he cared deeply for his family. He enjoyed golf, gardening and making wine at his home in Penticton.
He immigrated to Canada in 1968, and attended the University of Manitoba, where he met the love of his life, Rachel. He graduated with B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Food Science and later received a PhD. degree from the University of Alberta.
Dr. Mazza worked as a Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor (UBC, University of Manitoba), and retired from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in 2011. He later became an entrepreneur in a successful startup business. Dr. Mazza published more than 200 research articles, five books, and more than 30 book chapters. He held numerous patents, received several awards, and mentored hundreds of employees and students over a 40-year career.
Funeral services will be on Monday, May 1st, 2023, at 12:10 pm at St. Patrick’s Parish in Victoria. Interment will follow at Royal Oak Burial Park.
