Doug was born in Kingston, Ontario and moved to Victoria in 1942. Doug graduated from Oak Bay High School and continued to play poker with his high school friends until well into his 80’s. He started working for Oak Bay Municipality in 1949 as a water clerk, and retired in 1985 as Oak Bay’s purchasing agent.
After retirement Doug enjoyed golfing, gardening and nature rambles. He was a creative person and his family will treasure his writings and the working decoys he carved.
Doug was predeceased by his wife Diane (Christensen), and is survived by his three children, Jim (Joycelyn), Janice (Alan MacLeod) and Marc (Louise), five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Doug left these words for us:
“I’m outta here with a wish. Take me away to where a covey of Blue Grouse whinny for their missing mother. Where a flock of Black Brant stretch, preen and relax on a quiet sand bar by the ocean’s edge. Where a branch of Mallards set their wings for a downward swoop from the grey and windy skies into a set of decoys. Where California Quail chatter over the sound of crackling broom bushes and, yes, spread my ashes where you can see the Ravens soar in flight while calling, croaking and cajoling.”
Thank you to Berwick House kind staff for their support of Dad and his family over the past six years.
No service by request. In lieu of flowers, Swan Lake Nature Centre would be grateful for a donation in Doug’s memory.
