Our Lord has decided to have a banquet for those that have come to join him, so he has called on the only one that could run the show. Therefore we have lost our beloved Daisy. Mom was always quick witted with an honest and playful jab. We will never hear again her most favourite saying “Well that’s just exactly it.” Mom started early being the mother hen. Coaching Boys Fastball at Beacon Hill Park in the early 1950’s, that was always Daisy leading the charge. Later on she coached girls softball at Strawberry Vale. She ran the concession at the Layritz Park for 9 years - by herself and sometimes with little help. She would open the garage door after school to sell more treats just to help the park. She started bowling in ’61 at Town & Country Lanes. With just 8 out of 24 lanes used, Daisy got on the phone and in ’63 she had all 24 lanes full for Wednesday A.M Ladies League. She had everyone’s average done by the next week - “No calculator back then”. Daisy then found the best career for her, catering. She has always said she would “do it for free just to help the people have fun” But don’t ever fool with the wee Scot Lassie, she would put you in your place straight away. She has done hundreds of weddings in Victoria and beyond. Most of the East Indian community knew her as “Gramma”. One of her most favourite parties was the Christmas Parade at Jane Dolans, and always had a good story after Eric Charman’s gatherings.
Daisy helped raise 20 plus kids in the neighbourhood but only four of her own. Grilled cheese and kool-ade in the middle of a baseball game was one of Daisy’s biggest treats for us kids in Royal Oak. There was no one better than you, Mom. She has gone to do the banquet. Waiting for her is her daughter Juanita, father Sgt. Maj. Alex Stables, mother Flora Stables, sisters Flo, Georgina, Edith, and her late husband Bill. She leaves behind to remember her, daughters Dianne and Leslie their children and great grand-children, her son Grant and his daughter Chantel who came one a week to help Granma grocery shop or go to the doctor. We will always miss you and so will many. The most caring and compassionate, wee little Scot.
