Cyril Edwin “Ted” Shelley was born May 21, 1923 in Victoria to parents Jhon Shelley and Mary Jane Shelley (nee Verran).
Ted began his career at age 16, apprenticing at Hafer Machine Company and got a Machinist Certificate in 1944. After a few years he wanted to try something new and ended up becoming a partner in a small company that repaired marine propellers and radar equipment. He was very handy outside of work as well, he built the house on Tillicum Road in which three of his children grew up. Ted even built a pogo stick and a sheet metal “swimming pool” in the backyard for them to enjoy. He decided a change of employment was in order and began working at the Sooke sawmill where his machinery knowledge and expertise was instrumental in the running and upkeep of the various mechanical parts there. Unfortunately, the mill closed in 1989 which forced him into retirement at the age of 66.
He didn’t waste a moment of his retirement though, spending many days outdoors and thoroughly enjoying the time he got to spend with his dear wife Phyllis as they shared many RV adventures as members of the Good Sam Club. They travelled extensively throughout Canada and the US during this time. Vancouver Island provided the perfect backdrop for many of Ted’s favourite outdoor activities including hunting, fishing and camping. Many of these “off the beaten track” adventures were shared with his family and his son Doug in particular has many memories of these wonderful trips with his dad. Ted and Phyllis were also involved in square dancing and performed together in many parades across Vancouver Island.
