Dear Roger and families

I just today opened your e mail to me, how very sudden and tragic to hear your very sad news.  I worked with (marshman) my nick name for him for all the years at VanKam and always kept in touch by e mail and phone since we moved back to Alberta in 2007.  We had many a laugh and lots of yakking re the goings on at VanKam, mostly wondered about many things and why we were there etc etc.  Well you know how it goes.

Oh my goodness, I really am at a loss for words at the moment, but know I had the greatest respect and affection for him and shall remember his happy disposition, his love for your mother, and how he made everything seem like just another bump in the road of life.

I was shocked and deeply saddened to hear the news of Brian’s passing.  It seemed like only yesterday he was giving us emotional support as Karen and I walked away from our mother’s house. 

For thirty years Brian lived next door to my parents, he was a good neighbor and friend to my parents Mim and Keray.  For me Brian seemed to always be there puttering around the garden on my visits home but it wasn’t until dad passed away a few years ago that I spent time with him and came to appreciate his presences.  

Brian wasn’t a complainer and with his arthritis he could have easily been.  It always amazed us how he managed with those twisted hands.   

Brian wasn’t showy, he was a farm kid from Alberta, who liked to see things grow and nurture them and it showed in his garden.  He once talked of his first visit to Victoria “ the city of gardens” and how amazing the neighborhood gardens were at the time.  That was the city I remember growing up, summers of green lawns and gardens full of bright colourful flowers. That was what he loved of Victoria and in his own way tried to continue that tradition. 

He was a man with a good heart and a good sense of humor but he could easily be riled by the left coasters and the granola-eating weirdoes like me.  He hated that new bike path on Pandora.  
Brian was loved and appreciated and will be missed. He is now without pain and reunited with his dear Molly.

I was saddened to hear of Brian’s passing and wish to express my deepest condolences to Brian’s family.

Brian and Rick hired me as a driver in 1979 at Sidney Freight. They were doing the billing at that time in the old office. I worked with Brian at Sidney Freight for 16 years until Van-Kam took over and another 16 years at Van-Kam until we both retired in 2011 at age 65. We had lots of laughs and I really enjoyed our interactions.

I very much liked and respected Brian and will miss him.

I was absolutely shocked to hear of Brian's passing. He was such an amazing man and friend. Paulette and I would enjoy martini nights with him every couple of months, for the past 5 years or more - in the summer sitting on his deck in the sun with the 'oldies' playing on his radio - in the winter, we moved inside, rotating between our 3 homes. I miss him.

Unfortunately I won't be attending his service as I'll be in Mexico, but I will be there in spirit.  I'll sit on the beach that day drinking martinis, with extra olives, with him in my thoughts. I'm sure he'll be sitting next to me, in spirit.

I am so sorry for your loss - everyone whose life he touched, feel your loss so deeply.

Brian and I were friends for 34 years as we had met when He worked at Sydney Freight and I at Cottrell Forwarding. We became good friends fairly quickly as Brian's demeanor, friendliness and appreciation of people were an attractive draw. Through the years we became closer and with your mother's passing we shared some very intimate discussions about life and death. Molly was the love of his life and her passing was divesting for Brian but due to his inner strength he was able to continue. His hardest times were at this time of year as Molly made Christmas such as special event and without her being there for Brian it made the season hard for him. 

I will miss Brian and our conversations. He would also want to know the scuttlebutt about what was happening in the transportation industry and his friends/acquaintances that either were in the industry and had retired.

I will miss Brian as a great friend but an even greater person.

Brian is with Molly, the love of his life.

I'm genuinely heartbroken to hear of your loss, your father was a  
lovely man and a pleasure to have as a client. The few interactions I  
did have with him were some of the most heartening and memorable at  
our practice. I was very much looking forward to getting to know him
