Our beautiful Mother, Nana, Sister, Aunt and Friend, Katherine (Kate) Mary Knox passed away suddenly on early Christmas morning. She loved Christmas and was in the middle of baking and sorting gifts, as she so enjoyed doing for her family. Kate always said that if you look for it, a miracle happens every Christmas. The miracle this Christmas was that she passed quickly and while doing what made her happy – puttering and preparing for the day she loved so much.
She is predeceased by her son, Matthew James Knox (1991) and her mother and father, Mary and William Knox.
Kate leaves behind two children: her daughter, Rebecca Barton (husband Richard) and granddaughters Ella, Sophia and Hazel; and her son Jonathan (Jon) Knox (wife Nicole) and grandson Waylon. Kate was the eldest of five siblings, and is survived by her two brothers and two sisters: her brother John Knox (wife Avis); her brother David Knox (wife Heather), nephews Mike (wife Amanda) and Frank, and nieces Erin and Alexandra; her sister Elizabeth Langevin, niece Ashley and nephew Kelsey; and her sister Jennifer Knox, and nephews Braden, Garrett and Connor (father Ashley Smidt).
Kate was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and travelled throughout Canada as a young girl with her family. She lived in several different cities before moving to British Columbia, where she raised her family and resided for many years in a heritage home she restored in Queen’s Park, New Westminster. Kate cared for disabled residents there, while her children were young. She settled in Vernon in 1988, where she loved to spend time at her cabin on Okanagan Lake.
Throughout her life, Kate cared for many people and treasured above all else being a mother of three. She was a fierce dance and hockey mom, and cheered loudly from back stage and the stands. Her greatest pride was in the achievements of her children, her grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews.
After moving to Vernon where her parents resided, Kate worked as a realtor for almost twenty years. She put great value on being able to help clients’ dreams become reality, including people of limited financial means. She treated every client with great respect.
Kate loved music, and singing in the Catholic Choir. She loved travelling, especially road trips, and she enjoyed baking, gardening and shopping. She could shop in any part of the world, in even the smallest store in the tiniest town. She loved antiques, roses and beautiful things, especially if they involved a little bit of sparkle. Kate had a strong sense of occasion, and loved a good celebration. She always gave compliments to people - even strangers - and wanted everyone to feel beautiful and unique.
Thank you to the family and friends who have helped us through this difficult time. Your support and love has been a great source of comfort.
Prayers will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 5 pm at St. James Church on 27th Street. There will be a funeral mass on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 1:00 pm with a Celebration of Life reception to follow.
Please feel free to wear something pink, or a rose, to celebrate what she loved!
