The family of Hilda Schommer are sad to announce her peaceful passing at her Gateby home in Vernon, B.C. on November 5th, 2014. Hildegarde Johanna Schwebius was born in 1922 in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, the fifth of seven children to August and Martha Schwebius.
Hilda took on the role of teacher in a ‘one room’ rural schoolhouse. One year later, she married Alfred Schommer and traded her ‘one room’ school house for a ‘ten room farmhouse’. This career of wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother kept her busy for the next seventy years. After retiring from the farm at Handel, Saskatchewan to North Battleford, Mom enjoyed the friendships she made. A later move to Vernon, Mom truly enjoyed the beauty of the Okanagan. For the past twenty years, she loved signing her greeting cards to the grandchildren: ‘from Grandma Hilda in the mountains’. Hilda was a member of the CWL (Catholic Women’s League) for over sixty years and involved with Pro Life.
Hilda is survived by her dear sister, Martha; her children: Jim (Marie), Don (Faye), Bob (Jean), Ralph (Shirley), Annette (Lanny), Ethel (Russ), Martha (Wayne), Rosanne (Terry), Paul (Patty), Mark (Lisa), and Fabian (Monique); forty-one grandchildren; sixty-seven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, husband Alfred, daughter Margaret, daughter-in-law Fai, and grandson Boyd.
The family would like to thank the Gateby staff for the wonderful care they provided for the past three and one half years. The funeral service for Hilda will be held at St. Vital’s in Battleford, Saskatchewan.
