On Saturday, February 26, 2011, Virginia passed away peacefully, surrounded by family after a brief illness. She was born in Holden, Louisiana to Charles and Sarah Armistead.
After graduating from Southeastern State College in Louisiana, she joined the military. Virginia served in the Women’s Army Corps in the Pacific Division Air Transport Command during World War II. While serving as a Staff Sergeant in Hawaii, she met the love of her life Walt Rutledge.
Walt and Virginia were married in Honolulu and later resided in Ventura for 43 years. Virginia had a strong faith in God and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed volunteering as a pink lady at Community Memorial Hospital, as well as visiting elders in our community.
For over 20 years Virginia worked at Ventura College in the English Department. She loved her work and made numerous lifelong friends. After retirement, Virginia and Walt traveled extensively, played bridge and golf, and enjoyed entertaining in their home.
Virginia was a dear friend to everyone she befriended, and was loved by many people. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wally and Laurie, of Ventura; daughter, Ann, and her partner, Brad Henley, of Mercer Island, WA; grandson, Michael, and his wife, Erika, of Ventura; and her brother, Jack Armistead, of Biloxi, Mississippi.
A celebration of a life well lived will be at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 19, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, 1338 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura, CA 93001.
