Sarah was born August 8, 1922 to Guy Van and Lily Mae Owens Beatty in Glasgow, Kentucky. Sarah attended Elementary and High School in Glasgow.
She attended Western Kentucky State Teachers College, now Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky graduating in June 1944 with a Bachelors Degree in Liberal Arts. Sarah was the Editor-in-Chief of her College Year Book and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1944. Foregoing an offer of a teaching position, Sarah enlisted in the Navy Waves, received her training at Hunters College, New York and then was stationed at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego, California as a Hospital Corpsman caring for sailors and marines wounded in Pacific battles. In San Diego she met Ltjg Frederick A. Ulam USN. After her discharge from the Navy, Sarah traveled to Boston to join Fred and they were married in the Chapel at the Naval Hospital, Chelsea, Massachusetts, June 5, 1946.
Sarah is survived by her husband, Fred, and children, Angeline Barrett, Sarah Jane Vail, Martha Helms and her husband Michael, Dr. Frederick A. Ulam III and wife Judy, and Susannah Stone and her husband Charles; eight grandchildren and a great grandson.
Sarah, in addition to being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, was active in her church as well as civic affairs. She served as deacon at Community Presbyterian Church, representing her church on the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Ventura County. Sarah participated in her church’s food outreach to the needy, and in the Family-to-Family program providing hot meals for the homeless. Sarah taught Sunday school and participated in home Bible study for many years.
Sarah was a member of the Poinsettia Republican Women’s Club serving as its President and as Legislative Chairman for the California Federation of Republican Women, Southern Division. She worked in Campaign Headquarters for many Republican candidates including Ronald Reagan in his Governorship Campaign. Sarah was appointed a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky in recognition of her civic, community and military service.
Sarah was an avid and very accomplished Water Colorist exhibiting in the San Buenaventura Art Gallery and Ojai Art venues. Many of her paintings are displayed in her home and the homes of her children. In later years, she and husband Fred leisurely
traveled the by-roads and forest service roads across America from California to Maine and from the Mexican border to Canada in their Jeep Cherokee always purposely avoiding the big cities to really experience the grandeur of rural America.
A Memorial Service for Sarah will be held 2:00pm Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Community Presbyterian Church, 1555 Poli Street, Ventura, CA
