Roberta A. “Sandy” Umholtz left her loving family as she drifted off to sleep on Tuesday, July 9, 2013, waking up to a glorious sunrise in the arms her loving Savior. She was 86. Born on March 21, 1927, in San Bernardino, Sandy was the second child of Neta and Dewey West. She lived her formative years in San Bernardino, graduating from San Bernardino High School before starting her illustrious career as a telephone operator and secretary.
Ever the wanderlust, Sandy traveled throughout the continental United States living and working in 37 states before the age of 35, finally settling in Ventura in the early 60's. Married and twice widowed before her fortieth birthday, her third and final marriage to Jim Umholtz lasted 45 years. Jim, a long-distance trucker, fulfilled her dreams to visit all the states when he invited her to accompany him on his cross-country road trips. Jim preceded her in death in September 2010.
Sandy loved people and was known to have never met a stranger. She was always feisty and fun loving, ready to play games at a moment’s notice, visit with whoever needed a friend and loved to dance. She leaves behind her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Diana and Alan Loe; grandchildren, Carrie and Keith, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Phil Davis, Carol and Case Stuart; sister, Christy Dugger; brother, Wendell West; sister-in-law, Sam West, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Those who greeted her with open arms Tuesday were her beloved husband Jim, mother and father Neta and Dewey, step-mother Bertha West, sisters, Lorraine Maloch and Joy West, and brothers, Arlen and Bobby.
The family would like to thank the nurses and therapists of Livingston Memorial, Marie Nelson, NP, RN of Seaview, and Sandy’s care givers Christina Gonzales and Fawn Palomares for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, please support the local Food Share Bank in your community, Teen Challenge, or the Rescue Mission of your choice.
Services will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, 346 North Kimball Road, Ventura, with Pastor Ted Pugh officiating. A reception will follow in the McLaughlin Fellowship Hall at the church, with burial following at 2:00 P.M. in Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura, California.
