Robert (Bob) Noll was born in Palmerton, Pennsylvania on September 5th, 1928. He went to be with the Lord on October 10th, 2011 after a very short illness. Bob grew up in Lehighton Pennsylvania. He had two tours in the Army (1946 & 1949). Bob and his wife, Elaine moved to California in 1954 and to Ventura in 1956. He was preceded by Elaine, his wife of 60 years, in death last November in Ventura.
Bob worked for the CALTRANS for nearly 30 years. He was a highway field engineer, providing supervision and direction of contractors building freeways and roads in this county. Throughout his career he worked the road, building around Lake Casitas when the dam/lake was built, the freeway section on HWY 33 to Foster Park, HWY 101 freeway construction through Ventura, HWY 101 freeway construction north of Ventura and HWY 126 going to Santa Paula.
Bob’s first tour in the Army was directly after World Two (1946-1949) and he served in the Army Intelligence Service in Osaka, Japan for two years. He was assigned to work with the Japanese Police to prevent civil unrest caused by nationals who didn’t think the War should be over or repatriated Japanese soldiers held in Russian prison camps for many years who may have thought Japan’s next Government should be a communist one.
Bob’s second Army tour could only be characterized as a unintended consequence of something which seemed to be a good idea at the time. He and one of his Army friends, found out about the Army Reserves. Financial help for college tuition and pay for their once a month drill weekends was too good to pass-up so they joined. Well, the Korean War comes along a few months later and they were the first to be recalled. He had been discharged for less than 5 months. This time he went to the 101st Airborne Division (1949-1951).
Bob was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for many years and had many friends there. He was one of the Charter Members of the Channel Island Condor radio control model airplane club in Camarillo. He was an avid model aviation enthusiast both as flyer and builder and was active until the end. Bob also enjoyed skeet shooting with his son at the Point Mugu Rod and Gun Club.
Bob was always a great father, mentor, and provider. He leaves behind his daughter Robin; his son Jeff (wife Susan); his granddaughter Kimberly; his aunt, Arlene Sherman of New Jersey and his cousin, Charles Noll of Fresno.
The family would like to sincerely thank the Emergency Room and Critical Care Unit staff at Community Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care of our father. We would like to especially thank CCU nurses Gina and Sonia. Their gentle and expert care of Bob was of great comfort to his family.
Bob’s memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday November 7th at Grace Lutheran Church, 6190 Telephone Road, Ventura.
Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Charles Carroll Funeral Home, 15 Teloma Dr. Ventura, CA 93003. Phone 805-642-8134.
