It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of our loss of Melvin Steven Milan “Steve”, of Ventura, California -beloved husband, brother, uncle, son, member of a large extended family, and a friend to many. He passed away on the evening of Sunday, October 22, 2017.
Steve was born in Alhambra, California, on April 23, 1947, and resided in Ventura, California for 55 years. His early years were spent around the world as an Army “brat”. Steve and his older brother Bill, spent four years in Fairbanks, Alaska enjoying adventures not usually experienced by a California native. Then it was New Jersey, where his sister Claudia was born. After that, the family moved to Taipei, Taiwan for a whole year. Then back to the United States and onward to Bad Tolz, Germany for two years. During the family stay in Bad Tolz, Steve visited many European countries, including France, Spain, Austria and Italy. All of this traveling at an early age left Steve with a lifelong love for seeing new places and trying new experiences. Returning to the family’s hometown of Ventura, Steve found it a good place to settle.
Steve graduated from Buena High School in 1965, the first graduating class ever for Buena High, a fact that made him very proud. In1971, he graduated from Long Beach State University.
Steve worked for the County of Ventura for over 30 years, in many capacities including working with the county on establishing a curbside recycling program. His last position was Computer Services Manager.
In March 2009, Steve married Nuhad Amoun, who shared his love for adventure and traveling. Together they traveled and cruised as much as possible. A three week visit to Nuhad’s homeland of Lebanon was an extraordinary highlight for him. A cruise to Europe to revisit old memories and make new ones was a special time for the couple. Finding someone to share his love and life later in his life was a wonderful gift for him.
Steve is survived by his wife of eight years, Nuhad Amoun; brother, William E. Milan and his wife Mary; sister, Claudia Milan Mickelsen and her husband Christian; nephews, John Milan and Thomas Milan; and his niece, Robin Tilley Sears. He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Fred Milan and Ruth May Milan.
Steve was a man who loved living and learning. His passion for reading and studying is evidenced by the many books lining his bookcases. His quick wit and sense of humor gave us much laughter and joy. Continuously curious about others he was a lifelong learner. He enjoyed his fellowship with friends of his Mended Hearts Group, and those in his men’s Bible Study group at Ventura Missionary church. He was a mentor to many and a friend to more.
Steve was a believer in Jesus Christ and followed Christian life principles. And though our hearts are broken, we rejoice in his being with his Lord. Yes, will miss him for the void he left in our hearts and lives.
Visitation will take place from 10:00AM until 10:45AM on Saturday, October 28, 2017,at Ventura Missionary Church, with the Celebration of Life Service beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Ivy Lawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mended Hearts Ventura Division (805) 644-2733 and to the American Lung Association.
