Born to Sam and Mable McClure, March 19, 1917 in Caney, Kansas. Evelyn married Merle Hensley in 1944. They happily lived on a wheat farm in Kansas until 1953 when the family doctor advised Merle to get out of the wheat fields or buy a cemetery plot. It was then decided to move to California settling in Ventura along with their young son, Gary.
Evelyn decided to go to work for the Ventura Unified School District cafeteria “just until Gary was out of school”. She was promoted to manager and finally retired 18 years later. Long after Gary graduated and married.
A woman of many talents, Evelyn enjoyed quilting, painting in many mediums, stained glass, cooking (she made the best yeast rolls this side of the Mississippi), she also loved raising orchids. Evelyn spent many hours at her sewing machine and always had a project in the works…
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Hensley. She’s survived by her son, Gary and his wife Anita of Ventura; sister-in-law, Bonnie Jean along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 9, 2016, 1:00 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura with Pastor Dan Hull officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Evelyn’s name to the American Diabetes Association, 611 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 900, Los Angeles, CA 90017
Arrangements under the direction of Ted Mayr Funeral Home, Ventura, CA.
