Larry Poe, a lifelong resident of Ventura County succumbed quietly to the effects of Alzheimer’s disease on Friday, August 1, 2014. He was born November 27, 1938 in Ventura, CA to Leonard and Hazel (Dugan) Poe. Larry graduated from Ventura High School and attended Ventura College, where he excelled in athletics, particularly football and track. He enlisted in the Army in 1958 and served as military police in cold-war Germany where he met his wife, Heidi.
Following his military service, Larry was employed in the petroleum and chemical production and refinement industries in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Larry retired in 2005 after over forty three years of service.
Larry engaged in a variety of hobbies, most associated with building and piloting radio controlled aircraft and his full scale rotorcraft. He also enjoyed home improvement and construction projects, was always busy and enjoyed working. Perhaps his greatest joy was traveling, as he returned to Europe on many occasions with Heidi and later, with his loving partner, Elke Farber whom he met through their affiliation with the Ventura Rheinland Club. Elke and her family provided Larry with a rich, happy and loving environment in his retirement years which he so deserved.
Larry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Heidi. He is survived by his beloved Elke Farber and family; sons and daughters in law, Rick Poe and Susan Fine of Mojave, CA and Dan Poe and Michele Bowen-Poe of Camarillo, CA; granddaughter, Alison Poe of Newbury Park, CA and sister and brother in law, Sharon and John Clifton of Oak View, CA.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2014, 11:00am at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura with the Reverend Jonathan Mulford officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
