Helen Hawkins, a longtime Ventura resident passed away on October 9, 2014. She was born in Ojai, CA in 1921. Helen attended Nordhoff High School and Ventura College. She was the first civilian hired at Port Hueneme Naval Base and worked there until the war was over. Helen then moved to San Francisco working for an advertising agency and as a part time model. She also took tap dancing at Arthur Murray Dance Studio. It was there that she met and married George Hawkins, Sr.
Helen loved to go fishing with her husband; she loved to bowl and tap dance. She also loved to be around her three children, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Helen lived in Ventura in the family home for 57 years before moving to Washington to live with her daughter and family.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George; brothers, Leo and Bernie; and half-sister, Irene. She is survived by her three children, Kathy Hawkins of Weed, CA, Sherry Clevenger and husband Ed of Amboy, WA. and George Hawkins, Jr. of Ventura. Additionally, Helen leaves behind the following grandchildren and great grandchildren: Jim Yost and wife, Sara and kids, Fletcher and Maggie of Atascadero, Ca., Jeff Yost and wife, Amber and kids Kennedy and Callahan of Victorville, Ca., Shauna Ryan and husband Steve and kids Ronan and Riley of San Carlos, Ca., Logan Clevenger of Burlingame, Ca., Cami Caseday, husband Jacen and kids Braeden and Piper of Amboy, Wa., Molly Hawkins and husband Caius Pawson of London, England, Jenna Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga., Jack Hawkins stationed in Japan with the U.S. Navy, and Uriah Hawkins of Franklin, Tenn.
Helen volunteered with the Friends of the Library, and continued to support this charity until her passing.
Visitation will be held at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura on Thursday, October 16, 2014, from 3:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Gravesides services will be held at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park, 5400 Valentine Road, Ventura on Friday, October 17, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend Jonathan Mulford officiating
