George Erin Hurley, Jr., 70, passed away with his family at his side on November 19, 2018, in Thousand Oaks, California. He was born on May 17, 1948, in Taft, California, to George Erin Hurley, Sr. and Virginia Grace Wiseman Hurley. Both parents preceded him in death.
George is survived by his brother, James Michael Hurley (Elizabeth); wife, Berta Morris Hurley; daughter, Erin (John Garza); sons, Ethan (Keeley) and Ryan (Nikol); grandchildren, Shaydon, Mason, Canyon, Maggie, Lindsey, Maya, Emmy, Kasey, and Ellie; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, colleagues, students and athletes.
He met many lifelong friends while attending Taft Union High School in Taft, California. His experiences there guided his desire to make Newbury Park High School a welcome and exciting place to be. He played football for and attained his Bachelor’s degree, teaching credential, and Master’s at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. He started his career in education at NPHS in 1972. He loved his time at NPHS teaching multiple subjects, coaching baseball, wrestling, and football, as well as participating in many campus activities and causes. He devoted his life to working with youth and will be remembered for his caring demeanor and sense of humor.
In retirement, George continued to support the NPHS football program; continued to officiate high school track meets; volunteered for Special Olympics; participated in Civil War reenactments; participated in many living history presentations in classrooms around the southland; volunteered as a docent at the Stagecoach Inn; served on the CRPD Play Conejo Board; served on the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame Committee; but most of all adored spending time with his grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018, 1:00 pm, at the Newbury Park High School stadium, 456 Reino Road, Newbury Park. Please feel free to dress casually in any football jersey, Hawaiian shirt, Panther pride, uniforms for coaches, football or wrestling officials, track starters, Civil War reenactors, Stagecoach Inn pioneers, medical professionals, or anything else you’d like to wear to represent how you knew George.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating blood. Monetary donations can be made to the “NPHS Scholarship Fund.” Please write “George Hurley Memorial Scholarship” on your check.
