Chick Patterson, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, encircled by his family. He was born June 7, 1927 in Indianapolis, Indiana. There were 12 children born to Niles and Mary Patterson, and Chick was number 10. His mother died when he was 5, and the Catholic Church provided him a home.
Chick was always industrious and sold papers on Indianapolis street corners as a young boy. He later attended Butler University where he played basketball and studied to become a pharmacist. It was about this time that he met a fiery red-headed beauty, named Patty, who stole his heart.
Chick and Patty married November 11, 1949 and soon they were blessed with a baby girl, they named Susie. Just a year and a day later, a bouncing baby boy arrived they named Danny. With a family to support, Chick found work as a bricklayer. The brutal winters in Indiana made it difficult to work and California was calling.
In 1954, Chick and Patty moved their young family to Los Angeles where he began his life-long career as a Masonry Contractor. In 1961, Chick and Patty moved there family to the sea-side town of Ventura. Chick became an active member of the Ventura Elks Lodge where he served as Chaplin and made many early friends.
Chick and Patty launched Patterson Masonry in the early 1970’s. Together they built a successful business and partnership that lasted a lifetime. Chick and Patty shared a zeal for life and each other. They brought fun, laughter, and song wherever they went! They also brought the Indy 500 Race Day parties to Ventura County every Memorial Day since 1964 and converted hundreds of their friends into race fans!
Chick loved to sing and would do it at the drop of a hat. He would sing for occasions or no occasions, friends and strangers. He was a man with a song in his heart. He will fondly be remembered by family and friends for his special birthday song, a tradition that will live on for generations through his grandchildren.
His love of golf led him to Saticoy Country Club where he and Patty were members for over 30 years. They traveled to golf tournaments together with their friends and made many beautiful memories together. Chick loved the game, the camaraderie, and the 19th hole. On May 25, 2011, Saticoy Country Club flew their flag at half-mast in memorial of Chick Patterson.
Chick enjoyed life and had a large circle of friends that included special people from Saticoy County Club, Billy-O’s, Ventura VFW Hall, and the Ventura Elks Lodge. He valued these friendships deeply.
Chick had great love for his family. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patty (2004) and grandson, Mitch Sutton (2006). He is survived by his daughter Sue Tatangelo (husband Tom), and son Dan Patterson (wife Linda); grandchildren Scott Sutton, Tyler Sutton, Garrett Sutton, Danna Sutton, Clayton Tatangelo, Tara Tatangelo, Jim Patterson (wife Lu), Joe Patterson (wife Shannon); great grandchildren; Carly Sutton, Cody Sutton, Cassy Sutton, Gracie Sutton, Kelsea Sutton, Molly Patterson, Owen Patterson, Ann Marie Patterson; sisters Katie and Rita; brother-in-law Frank Smith, and many loving nieces and nephews.
