(8/3/1951- 2/28/2023)
It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Keith Wood announces his passing on February 28th, 2023, at the age of 71 years. He was born on August 3rd, 1951, to Harold and Myrtle Wood of Falls Church, Virginia who have proceeded him in death. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 37 years, Carol Wood of Venice, FL, his daughter, Katherine Bowman (Steve), two grandsons, Jacob and Reid Bowman, and his sister, Janet Iagnemmo (Al).
Doug developed an affection for history and militaria at an early age and it endured throughout his life. After the passing of his father in 1967 he attended the Frederick Military Academy. He began his police career in 1971 at the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, DC. He retired after 26 years of service from a career he thoroughly enjoyed and was very proud of. During the latter part of that time he also worked in security for 12 years at Knollwood Army Distaff Hall for retired service members. He resided in Northern Virginia and enjoyed weekends boating on the Potomac River and visiting historical battlefields with family, friends and his Springer Spaniels. After retirement he relocated to Venice, FL in 2003 where he enjoyed travel, classic cars and hosting family gatherings. He was a founding member of the Florida West Coast Car Club, served as Club President for 6 years and was a great “good will ambassador” for their many fund raisers and events.
Doug loved life and had great enthusiasm, especially for making certain everyone in his presence felt welcomed and was enjoying themselves. He touched many lives with his humor, energy and generosity. He will be greatly missed.
Doug’s last wishes were for no formal funeral or memorial service to be held. He preferred that we gather together privately with our families and friends to celebrate his life.
Doug had a heart for children and veterans. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice in memory of Doug.
