Mark graduated from Midland Dow High School in 1973 and attended Michigan State University receiving a degree in Hotel & Restaurant Business Management. He then began his career in the restaurant business working for Steak 'n Ale and Chi Chi's.
Mark married the love of his life, Coleen Paulson, March 7, 1995, in Ann Arbor, MI, where they owned and managed their first Outback Steakhouse. In July, 1998, Mark & Coleen made the move out west to Vancouver, WA, where Mark became a Joint Venture Partner with the Outback Steakhouse Evergreen Restaurant Franchise. Mark spent the next 7 years traveling the Northwest teaching, guiding, mentoring, leading and opening new restaurants. Mark received many awards in his career. The one he was most proud of was the Industry Achievement Award from the Oregon Restaurant Association.
Mark's favorite pastime was spending time with family. He felt it was a gift from God when he became Papa to granddaughter, Isabelle, and grandson, Sammy. Mark loved all sports but his favorite was golf-playing, watching and discussing the game. He spent many hours on the golf course with his Dad, Wife, family and friends. Mark enjoyed traveling and spent time with his family and friends in Michigan, Iowa, Florida, Hawaii and at the cabin in Minnesota. After a long hard fight with diabetes and complications related to the disease, Mark passed away peacefully at home with Coleen by his side.
Mark is survived by his loving wife, Coleen; daughter, Erin Teel; grandchildren, Isabelle and Samuel; mother, Joanne Johnson; siblings, Mary Fuentes, Lisa Grundy and David Johnson; and also several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Mark will be held 1:00 pm, Wednesday, June 5th at
Messiah Lutheran Church. A memorial visitation will be 11 am - 2pm, Tuesday June 4th at Vancouver Funeral Chapel.
