Wong Wing Kwong was born in Shi Qi, Guangdong, China in 1933. He moved to Hong Kong in 1949 when he was sixteen years old. He had one sister and three brothers. He completed secondary education in Hong Kong. He worked as an accountant first at United Advertising Co. Ltd in Hong Kong for three years and later at Sincere Life Assurance Co. Ltd in Hong Kong for over 35 years before retiring in 1991.
Wong Wing Kwong married his wife Chan Lai Ming in 1966. They have one daughter and two sons-- Cecilia, Desmond, and Remy. The family immigrated to Vancouver, Canada in 1990. All three children attended post-secondary schools and graduated in Universities in Canada. They were all happily married in Canada. Wong Wing Kwong has three grandsons-- Brandon, Matthew, and Myron.
As a husband, though not good at expressing affection in words, Wong Wing Kwong loved and cared for his wife very much. They enjoyed each other's company and loved going to places together.
As a father, Wong Wing Kwong was a kind, considerate, caring, and responsible role-model. He set high standards in moral and ethical principles for his children. He taught them to practise good deeds and virtues. He worked diligently to ensure his family was well taken care of. He also treated his children's spouses as his own children and care for them the same way he would to his own.
As a grandfather, Wong Wing Kwong enjoyed spending time with his three grandsons. He took every opportunity to play with them at amusement parks and playgrounds, picking them up from school, having conversations with them, listening to them singing/performing on stages and over the phone. He was particularly playful among his grandsons. He constantly reminded them the importance of healthy diet and routines, and be good citizens.
As a friend, he cherished every friendship and had made many life-long friends since he was a teenager. His friends often referred him as 'kid' for his innocent and truthful personality. He kept regular contact with overseas families and friends via phone calls and letters. He also enjoyed meeting new people, and socializing with local friends and neighbours.
As a person, Wong Wing Kwong believed in wealth at heart. He led a frugal life and made best use of resources on hand. He held high moral standards, was gentle, kind, easy-going, and honest. He was curious and inquisitive about new ideas and knowledge. He was humble and was not afraid to ask for help.
Wong Wing Kwong was very cautious about health and dental well-being of himself and family. He would remind everyone to wash their hands before, and floss/rinse after meals. He did exercise as often as he could and enjoyed keeping abreast of health-related information through reading medical columns and attending health talks.
Wong Wing Kwong lived a simple yet busy life. He enjoyed watching TV, listening to chinese opera, classical music, and radio programmes, taking a stroll after meal, doing Qigong exercise, visiting neighbourhood stores, fixing things around the house, trying out new chinese restaurants for dim-sum, and spending time with his grandsons and family. Wong Wing Kwong enjoyed chinese art appreciation, such as water-colour drawings, and calligraphy. He liked listening to buddhist music, and regularly visited Guanyin temple to pay tribute to his late families.
Wong Wing Kwong enjoyed healthy eating; he watched his diet carefully and refrained from cold drinks, fried, fatty, and junk food. His favourite foods are dim-sum, BBQ pork bun, congee, pig's blood, fish, chicken, fruits and vegetables, and vegetarian dishes.
Wong Wing Kwong passed away peacefully in bed without pain on Oct 30, 2014 at the age of 81 after coping with liver cancer for about 3 years. He was survived by his wife of 48 years, three children and their spouses, and three grandsons.
Wong Wing Kwong will be remembered dearly by family and friends in Canada and around the world.
