Sylvia was born in Vancouver to parents Thomas Alexander and Sylvia Louise Alexander, the third child of five, and raised in West Point Grey on 5th avenue. She attended Lord Byng High School, graduating in 1954. She met Bob when she was 15 and they became high school sweethearts. Sylvia then attended Normal School, obtaining a teacher’s certificate.
Marrying in 1956 they moved to Gibsons where Sylvia taught Elementary School while Bob scaled logs up and down the coast. After a few years Bob and Sylvia moved to North Vancouver where Della and Doug were born and raised. Sylvia received her Bachelor of Education from UBC while attending night school.
One of Sylvia’s greatest pleasures was singing with the Vancouver Bach Choir. She had cherished friends and they traveled to Holland, the UK and Japan for choral festivals. This group of friends played bridge weekly, once they retired from singing.
In 1984 Bob and Sylvia formed CarlWood Lumber, where they started with a small office and warehouse in North Vancouver. Bob would sell the lumber and Sylvia would do the bookkeeping.
After her children were independent Sylvia taught ESL (English as a Second Language) at an Adult Education facility in North Vancouver. There she made many life-long friends that were students and colleagues.
Bob and Sylvia built a cottage at Secret Cove, where the family spent year-round holidays and created many lasting memories.
Moving back to West Point Grey in 2001, they joined St. Helen’s Anglican Church.
Sylvia is survived by her spouse Bob, her daughter Della (Steve ), her son Doug (Catherine) and her grand-children Alexandra (Aaron), Matthew (Angela), Tom, Alicia, Stuart and brother Gordon Alexander (Rosalyn).
A Memorial service will be held Saturday July 6th 2024 at St. Helen’s Anglican Church 4405 W 8th Ave, Vancouver, BC at 1 pm followed by tea and refreshments in the narthex. All are welcome.
