Shu Ping Wong 黄壽平

David Shu Ping Wong (Wong Shu Ping) 黄壽平 passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024 at Vancouver General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He celebrated a long life of 93 and was blessed with a large family and many friends.

He is survived by his children Ian, Geoff (Jehnel), Lena (Wong), Weldon (Jennifer), Harry, Lilli (Mike) and Nancy, his adored grandchildren Mark, Jasmine, David, Amber, Karina, and Nicholas.

Shu Ping was born in a small village in Toi San, China, where times were tough. He left his family at a young age to immigrate and provide income for his family back home. He came to Canada at age 17 in 1949 with a limited education and a desire to work hard. He came to Canada along with his brothers, Shu Don Wong and King Sheung Jang.

He first worked in kitchens in Canada before becoming a cook and eventually running a small cafe, Seven Luck Restaurant, named after his 7 kids. He married So Ching Wong in 1958 and supported his family working at the Canadian Fishing Company. His wife made connections in Chinatown as well as taking care of the kids. He started on the cannery shifts working his way upwards until his retirement.

The family would attend events at the Wong Association, helping with activities with our mom and attending their banquets. Dad was simple and supported mom behind the scenes on her many charity fundraisers and travels so she could give back to the community. He stayed close to home always looking after his family. Mom received her awards for the Diamond Jubilee and King Charles Coronation medal and dad was proud to see her accomplishments. He made and fulfilled his promise to take care of her many years ago and continued to support her throughout the years.

Shu Ping loved gardening and had a large patch of plants, flowers and fruit trees around the home that he tended. He has many fig, plum, pear, peach trees and vegetables. He was well known by the neighbours when he walked the area. He would help them with their gardens and offer them plants. He got to enjoy us renovating his house and decluttering this past year and knew that we were doing ok so he was at peace with his family doing well.

In their later years, both our parents had challenges with diabetes but lived to old age together. Deepest gratitude to the medical teams at Vancouver General Hospital and his diabetes team. Their care and support over the years has been tremendous.

We learned to be hardworking with him as a strong role model of perseverance and commitment to doing a job well done. He taught us to keep our promises and he kept his promises over his lifetime.

He will be resting in the beautiful Mountain View Cemetery next to his wife and close to home. We will remember him. He will be forever missed.
