It  is a such a  sad occasion that  simple words of  sympathy  is all I can offer to his family and very close friends.  

Ron had a very deep sense of  humor that was founded in his great intellect.  And I cannot think of Ron without a smile coming to my face. It is a sad smile, but one that is maintained by the great number of wonderful moments that Ron created, by the power of his personality, for his friends. 



I am so sorry to hear of your sudden passing. You were a proud Vancouverite.  The structural engineering profession lost one of its very best.  You were a top practitioner, researcher, lecturer and speaker who generously gave back in many ways for the betterment of our profession. I would always remember your guest lecture in my last year of undergraduate which stimulated me into structural engineering practice.  I’d bet there are many more like me who were inspired by you in different ways. Your ability to deliver a talk that took a highly complex topic and simplified it for the average engineer was second to none.  There will never be another star like you that helped put Vancouver on the world stage in earthquake engineering research.  You will be missed Ron. 

I was very sad to hear of Ron's passing. During my 25 years on the Standing Committee for Structural Design Ron was the voice of knowledge, wisdom and integrity in earthquake engineering. His sense of humour and warmth also made him a great pleasure to spend time with.  With a heavy heart  I send my condolences to Hazel and the rest of his family for their great loss.

I have worked with Ron on the CSA and SCED committees and he was instrumental helping me join RJC Toronto 10 years ago. He was a fantastic colleague, engineer and researcher. Loved life and his rationality was present at every moment.

I was extremely sadden by the passing of Ron Devall. He was a brilliant engineer with an excellent personality and pleasant sense of humour. I share many memories with him during my association with the Standing Committee on Seismic Design for the National Building Code of Canada during his Chairmanship. Canada lost a great structural engineer; he will be missed.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Ron DeVall for over 30 years on codes and standards development in Canada. Ron was a dedicated and immensely talented engineer, freely giving of his time and experience and always looking for a better way to do things. He had a knack for asking questions that invariably contributed to a better solution. He was admired by his colleagues and friends alike and will be sorely missed by all who were privileged enough to know him.

My condolences to you.  Ron was a very practical-minded guy, and inspired me in the short time I knew him from building code work.  I also greatly appreciated his sense of humor.


I was so sorry to hear about the passing of this great man. I worked with Ron for many years as the NRC support for him in his role as the Chair of CANCEE and then the Standing Committee on Earthquake Design.  His expertise and leadership were second to none.  He will be missed.
