With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of our dear relative Richard Edward Baker at his home on Xwmelch’stn (Capilano Indian Reserve No. 5) on November 25, 2024. Fondly known as Richie, he was born to his parents, Richard Albert Baker and Marie Elizabeth (nee: Jeffries) on February 12, 1962, at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. He descends from the Kwakwaka’wakw, Shishalh, and Skwxwú7mesh Nations, He grew up in Xwmelch’stn (Capilano) and attended Norgate Community School, St. Augustine’s Indian Residential School in Sechelt, St. Mary’s Indian Residential School in Mission, and Hamilton Junior High and Eslha7an Learning Centre in North Vancouver. Richie was an entrepreneur – Master Carver, teacher and mentor, owner and operator of West Coast Native Arts where he sold beautiful native Indian designed rings, bracelets, necklace, and earrings; The Baker Brothers Contracting for siding, tree falling, landscaping and construction; and he worked for the people of Squamish Nation as a Councillor from 2005-2009, then 2013-2017, and 2017-2021. Richie believed strongly in community, culture and traditional beliefs. Richie’s hobbies included golfing, riding Harley’s, poker/slots, fishing, hunting, and was well known for storytelling. He was well known in the lacrosse community and achieved three Lax Championships, Intermediate North Shore Indians in 1993 and in 1999 with Burnaby Bandits. He was very proud of his date of sobriety - January 1, 2003.
He will be dearly missed by his sons Troy Thomas Richard Jacobs, Tyler Alan Jacobs, Shane Harold Gerard Flood, Kalem Randy Joe, Joe Dza'wadi Kenneth Baker, Richard Edward Baker Jr.; daughter Jessie Angeline Baker; grandchildren Taneale Autumn Rae Baker-Jacobs, Troy Matthew Billy Baker-Jacobs, Lindsey Marie Guerrero, Alayla Becca Campbell-Jacobs, Taelyn Sage Marie Jacobs-George, Tiyimia Louise Clara Jacobs-George, Marcallina Ashton Marie Flood-Baker, Ila Elsie Louise Flood-Baker; Brothers Benjamin ‘Ben’ Arthur Baker (Jane) and Matthew Todd Baker; sister Deborah Ann Baker (Hector); dear friends Collette, Samantha Eden Joe; God daughter: Corina Leni Jean Nordvie; and many loving relatives and dear friends.
