Julie was born on August 8, 1947 to Harry and Florence (nee John) Newman and passed peacefully surrounded by love of family and friends at 4:00 pm on July 13, 2014.
Julie was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and her pride and joy were her children Ray Ritza, Michelle George, Dionne Nadine Baker, Jordan Ann Joseph (Lance) and Ben Baker; grand children Rachelle, Damian (Stacy), Seth, Zoe, Darian, Isaac and Owen; and great grandchildren Ethan, Emma and Nathan; brothers Gordon and Alan (Vanessa); and special niece daughters Kathleen Smith (Bruce) and Kelley McReynolds (Mark).
Squamish Nation Chiefs and Council will dearly miss Julie’s as she served three, four year terms with our Nation. She will be remembered for her commitment to various political organizations, her own schooling, and willingness to return home. She worked with individuals, families and the community as a whole and is well recognized at St. Paul’s Indian Catholic Church, Capilano Longhouse and Squamish Lillooet Cultural Centre where she mentored many with teachings of our past leaders. Julie is best remembered for her passion in collecting cedar bark basketry and wool weavings and her ability to maintain them with standards of museum quality. Her chuckle and smiling face will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A prayer service will be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 7:30 pm at St. Paul’s Indian Catholic Church, 424 West Esplanade Road, North Vancouver, BC; a funeral service will also be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 10:30 am at Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC.
