October 12 1931 - January 20, 2023
91 years
Jack was born and raised in the small town of Birtle, Manitoba. He was the second oldest of four children and fondly recalled many happy childhood memories growing up.
Following graduation in 1950, he joined the RCMP and headed off to Regina for training. He was stationed in Alberta- High River, Strathmore, Banff, Calgary, Slave Lake and in Drumheller where he met and married Hilda Naffin in1958. He was involved in many different policing activities with the RCMP, including security for a prime minister as well as Bobby Kennedy. Jack would tell the story of the Kennedy motorcade stopping outside of Calgary at a farmer’s field for a game of touch football which included all of the security detail.
In 1971, as a Sargent he was sent to Slave Lake as the officer in charge of a large portion of northern Alberta. It was a great adventure with hunting, fishing and endless outdoor activities. He retired from the RCMP in the mid-seventies and began a career as a home builder and realtor in Burnaby.
Jack loved sports and kept in shape his entire life. He excelled in curling, tennis, golf and especially hockey. He played hockey into his 80’s travelling the world playing in old-timer tournaments. Jack played on many teams going back to his RCMP days as well as teams like the Labatt Blues.
Jack was an avid motorcyclist into his 80’s as well. He rode through Europe, Central America, the USA and Canada. His hockey and motorcycling buddies became his life long friends.
Jack lived life to the fullest- travelling the world - India, Nepal, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Japan, the Soviet Union, Europe and throughout the USA.
He loved WWII history especially vintage aircraft like the Spitfire. He earned his pilots licence and owned the iconic Piper J3 Cub airplane which he flew in Slave Lake and a float plane situated on Burnaby Lake.
One of Jack's favorite places was Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast. He rebuilt a cabin on the beach and spent time there with family and friends. He enjoyed chatting with his many visitors around the fire pit and always had a dog or two by his side for most of his life.
Jack was also a life time boater- owning numerous boats. He travelled the BC coast fishing and exploring - something he’s passed onto his son, Dave and grandson, Matt.
Jack was loved by so many people for his colourful storytelling, positive attitude and kindness. He was a free spirit who lived a full and happy life.
He will be missed by many, especially his loving family: wife Hilda, son David (Emma), daughter Darlene (Harald), grandchildren Alivia and Matthew, surviving brother Harrison, sister Marjorie as well many nieces nephews, extended family and friends in BC and Alberta. He is predeceased by his older brother, Arthur.
Please consider a donation to the BC Prostate Cancer Foundation in Jack's name in lieu of flowers.
A celebration of Jacks life will be held at a future date.
