James Michael Byrne, beloved husband, father, brother and friend, passed away at home in Vancouver on March 9, 2016, at the age of 70. Jim will be dearly missed by Rachel, his wife and companion of almost 50 years, by his son David, by his brothers, sisters and large extended family in Newfoundland and across the country, and by his friends and colleagues from over 45 years in Vancouver. Jim was born in Torbay (Newfoundland) on August 1, 1945, as the second child and eldest son of Alex and Violet Byrne. In his early twenties, Jim headed to Toronto, where he met Rachel. The couple married and soon moved to Vancouver, where Jim and Rachel raised a family and enjoyed many happy years together. Jim loved his work of 46 years as a salesman and manager at Gandy’s Hardware in Kitsilano. From the days of the hippies until 2014, Jim was a true fixture on Fourth Avenue, known by thousands over the years as the go-to man for everything hardware and household. At home, Jim loved watching sports and British TV shows, relaxing with his dogs and cats, and working in the backyard. He was a quiet, humble and kind man who deeply loved his family. We will miss him intensely, but recognize that he is at peace and on to a better life.
As requested by Jim’s family, there will be a private memorial service in the future. Please share your memories of Jim in the guestbook on this website.
