Helen Yuen was born on September 14, 1938, in Guangzhou, China. She passed peacefully at Dania Home in Burnaby, BC, on her 83rd birthday on September 14, 2021. Helen is survived by her husband, Kong Yuen; son, Kent Yuen; daughter-in-law, Tina Yuen; her grandsons, Ayden, Brendan & Ethan Yuen; her daughter, May-Ling Lockwood; and son-in-law, Shaun Lockwood.
Helen had a classic timeless style in her early days. She worked as a beautician and loved to travel when she was single. Some notable places she visited were Egypt, Paris, and Montreal, to name a few. She arrived in Canada in her late 20s and continued to work as a beautician in Montreal.
She later travelled to Vancouver, where she met Kong. They married on November 1, 1969 and were together for 52 years.
Helen was a loving homemaker, devoted to her family’s well-being. Her authentic Chinese cuisines were healthy and delicious. She would often make traditional Chinese herbal soups to keep the family healthy. She loved to cook and would always try out new recipes. She rarely used western medicine and her influence of herbal Chinese natural remedies continues to be passed down and used by the family.
Helen also enjoyed spending time with family and being in nature; she loved her walks through forested parks and gardens. In 2007, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Although over time it progressed, the decline was slow, as she had a healthy heart and a lot of support and unconditional love from her family. Her kind sincere smiles will be deeply missed. She will be forever remembered and cherished in our hearts.
We wish to extend our gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Dania Home for their professionalism, kindness and compassionate care.
