Our dear mother Eloise (Gang) was born in Victoria on August 5, 1921, and died peacefully in Vancouver on June 21, 2023, shortly before her 102nd birthday.
The seventh of ten siblings, Eloise grew up in Victoria, where she attended Victoria High School. After graduation she worked in a large retail store where she quickly rose to the in-house accountant, despite no formal training. Soon after she met and married her beloved “Ginger”, Commander John Fisher RCN (d. 1990).
Eloise will be dearly missed by her daughter Sally (Keith) and son Charles (Carolyn); nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Sadly, her eldest son Brian (Margaret) pre-deceased her in 2017.
Eloise was a warm, devoted and caring person with a wonderful sense of humour and fun. She was blessed with good health and boundless energy all her life. She loved her garden and daily walks along Oak Bay’s Willows Beach, but most of all she loved her time spent at the family cottage at Lake Cowichan. Her grandchildren still fondly tell the story of Gang on her 90th birthday sliding down the firemen’s pole in the kids’ two-level bunkhouse at the cottage; followed by a swim in the lake.
Scrabble and card games were a source of delight for Eloise, and she rarely lost to her family in these spirited competitions. Her competitive spirit was matched only by her enjoyment of friendly gatherings and the laughter they brought. Additionally, Eloise's nimble fingers skillfully knitted and crocheted, dedicating her time and talent to creating blankets, sweaters, and other items for those in need. Her contributions to the Salvation Army exemplify her selflessness and generosity.
Eloise had a very good life. We will miss her presence, but her legacy will continue to inspire us. She has left us all with her love and memories, which we will cherish always.
