Darrel passed away suddenly at work at the age of 64 on Wednesday, May 27th, 2020. He was an exceptional man with a powerful and passionate work ethic, loyal husband, devoted father, adoring grandfather, and a kind soul with a heart of gold. Through his interests in photography and gardening, he leaves an unforgettable legacy of natural beauty captured in film and flowers.
Darrel's passions from a young age transcended his love of bike riding and photography and through his art he showed the world the joy he felt when pedaling through nature. He was always striving to bring humour to situations; he would make endless "dad" jokes over coffee in order to crack a few smiles and create laughter in the people around him. Darrel had the firmest and friendliest of handshakes and would always look you in the eye to let you know he was listening to every word in a conversation. He always had the right advice and the biggest heart; without fail, he would tell you exactly what you needed to hear to steer you right. The love Darrel had for his family made him a big teddy bear with a hug for each of them every time he saw them; he shared experiences with his grandchildren at bird sanctuaries and showed amazing pride when walking his daughter down the aisle.
Darrel was well engaged in the community, frequently donating to the food bank during the holidays as he believed everyone deserved to enjoy a meal with their family on Christmas. In the community garden at his home in Burnaby, he worked tirelessly to bring the flowers to their full glory and give residents a sense of pride and beauty that all could share in. He frequently led the community barbeques, never missing a chance to share his love of cooking and amazing talent for it with the people (and his loyal cats) around him.
No words can adequately express the grief in our hearts and the depth of the loss to our family and community. Darrel touched all of our lives in different ways that made our world brighter and more beautiful.
Darrel joins his parents William and Muriel; brother, Dwayne; sister, Diane. He is survived by his loving wife Carol, brother, Don; sister, Shelly; daughter, Nicole; son, Steven; nephew, Beau; nephew, Blake and his wife, Tammy; niece, Hunter; nephew, Gunnar; niece, Brandy-Jo and her husband, Pete; great-niece, Aspen; great-nephew, Skuli; grandchildren Bradley, Caiden, Ryann, William, and Samantha; step-son, Paul; step-son, Daniel-James; extended family Mary-Lou, Ernie, Julie, Paul, Lisa, Brayden, Rylan, and his cats Jinx and Smudge.
Darrel would never want us to forget that good days are always ahead. On Mondays, he would always say with a smile, "We're almost at Friday."
A celebration of Darrel's life will be held on the 7th of June in his garden at 1859 Woodway Place, Burnaby, BC.
