Mr. Chi Sheung Ng 吳智常

Chi Sheung Ng 吳智常 was born in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China on September 23, 1936 and passed away peacefully in Vancouver, British Columbia on September 20, 2022 at the age of 85 years.

Chi Sheung, son of Ng Kwong Yui and Lau Miu Kwan, grew up in Zhongshan and moved to Hong Kong in 1962, where he apprenticed as a chef at several restaurants.

He met his wife Sau Heng through friends and they married in 1969. Shortly afterwards, they relocated to Canada when he was recruited to work at Ho Ho Restaurant, one of Vancouver’s popular Chinese restaurants at the time. They settled in Vancouver and had a family with three children: Alan, Dennis and Kelly.

In 1971, Chi Sheung and his business partners ventured out on their own to start Kwangchow Restaurant, specializing in Cantonese food in the heart of Vancouver's Chinatown. For over 30 years until retiring, he worked long hours, cooking and leading staff to serve dim sum, dinners and banquets for the community.

In the early 2000's, Chi Sheung entered into retirement. With more time on his hands, he pursued interests in gardening, traveling and volunteering. He was involved in several charities, especially active in the Chinese Benevolent Association and the Shon Yee Benevolent Association, where he was their Seniors Division’s president for over 12 years. He loved organizing banquets, trips, cruises and various celebrations for the members.

To his family, Chi Sheung was a dedicated husband, loving father and grandfather. To his friends and community, he was humble, honest, kind and well respected. He enjoyed sharing his passion for food, mentoring aspiring chefs and lending a helping hand wherever he could.

Chi Sheung spent his last days surrounded by his loving family. He will be forever remembered by his wife Sau Heng; children Alan (Angela), Dennis, Kelly (James); and grandson, Grayson.

A visitation for Chi Sheung will be held Friday, October 14, 2022 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel, 1835 E Hastings St, Vancouver, British Columbia, where the funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 12:30 PM. The service will also be live streamed at https://funeraweb.tv/en/diffusions/61188.

Interment will follow at 2:30pm at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Ave, Burnaby, British Columbia.

Reception at Grand Crystal Seafood Restaurant will be held after the graveside service.
