Alyssa Megan Lewis - artist, designer, wife, sister and daughter - sadly passed away on July 15, 2024 after valiantly fighting cancer that ravaged her body for four and a half years. She was a bright creative light with exquisite taste and attention to detail that has now been extinguished. Her body of work will live on. She had a generous personality and loved to travel the world which she did right up to the end. She will be so deeply missed by Nik, her husband, family and friends. She was thirty-eight years young, born April 11th, 1986 at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary AB.
At the age of four she and her two-year old brother, Warren, set off on her first family adventure to live in Jakarta, Indonesia for two years. She attended Jakarta International School and had many adventurous experiences setting the tone for the rest of her life.
Her family returned to Canada for four years and Alyssa attended the Banff Trail Elementary French Immersion program developing bi-lingual language skills that served her well for the rest of her life. She joined the Alberta Ballet Company developing dance skills that brought her so much joy.
A move to Kuwait for the next four years of Alyssa’s life had her enjoying her favorite school experience at the American School of Kuwait. She joined the Kuwait School of Dance and had so many amazing dance experiences and recitals which she loved with her heart and soul.
Alyssa’s high school experience took her to the Leysin American School in Leysin, Switzerland. Another school experience that she loved so much that in her Senior year she never left the mountain town.
On to University, Alyssa’s dual focus on fine art and design had her enjoy so many academic and travel experiences. She attended Otis School of Design in Los Angeles and the University of Alberta Industrial Design programs with an internship in Amsterdam with Marcel Wanders Studio and a semester abroad in Cologne Germany. She also did post-graduate fine art work at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.
Craving a place to call home, Alyssa moved close to her brother in Vancouver BC. After working for a few years as an industrial designer she found her niche working through The Aviary Co-op design studio. She started her firm Studio Block and established herself as a leading designer in Western Canada.
Alyssa met her husband Nik eleven years ago and they married in Oaxaca, Mexico five years ago. He shared many of Alyssa’s artistic and design visions and with his wood working skills made so many of their visions come to life. They renovated a Gastown Loft, a Lions Bay Home, a Vancouver former stable townhouse and finally a turn of the century apartment into beautiful spaces so visually appealing they rented out for commercial photo shoots.
Alyssa two main passions in life were travel and design. She loved nothing more than planning and executing trips which always involved “walking the feet off” of her travel companions and seeing as many art and design venues as a day would allow. She had so many more travel plans but her health cut those dreams short. She was able to manage two European trips with her family to Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and return for a visit to Leysin, Switzerland and two trips to Mexico after her diagnosis.
Her family and friends will miss Alyssa’s inner and outer beauty, her passion for life and that mischievous twinkle in her eye. We know she is watching us from above and will be with us in spirit for the rest of our short time on this beautiful planet we call home.
For all family and friends wishing to celebrate Alyssa’s life we will share location and date details at a future date.
