It is with great sadness that the family of Alexandra Psiharis (nee Hatzisavva) must announce her sudden passing on May 1, 2021 at the age of 55.
Alexandra was born on December 25, 1965 in Athens, Greece to Panagiotis Hatzisavvas and Kiriaki (nee Migou). The eldest sister to Sophia and Eleni, Alexandra spent her early years in Athens while also spending her summers with her beloved grandmother Eleni in Eretria, Greece, which always remained one of her favourite places to visit with family and enjoy beautiful summers.
In 1974, Alexandra and her family left Greece to begin a new life in Vancouver, Canada - the place Alexandra lovingly called home for the rest of her days. A graduate of Gladstone secondary school, Alexandra grew up loving family, sports, friends and always dreamt of traveling the world - a passion she would later indulge in with verve and vigour.
In 1984, Alexandra met the love of her life: a visiting university student from Greece named Kostas Psiharis. The two fell madly in love and in order to be together in Canada decided to marry within 6 months at only 19 years of age. One short year later, their first and only son George was born.
Alexandra’s family was, simply put, the centre of her universe. She took incredible pride, joy and found a deep sense of purpose being the emotional rock that a wide community of people in Canada and Greece both relied upon and deeply admired. She was incredibly intelligent, deeply authentic and only tolerated the truth - a quality that saw her serve as a role model to her many family and friends while also challenging all those around her to be their best selves.
Her life in Vancouver saw her raise her family, travel the world, and embark on a 30+ year career at the University of British Columbia. In 2016, Alexandra welcomed her granddaughter Evthokia (Evi) to the world. For Alexandra’s last six years, she devoted herself to her beloved Evi spending countless days with her living, laughing and loving life. While their time has been unfairly cut short, the time they did share will live on for its countless memories and laughter.
Alexandra was preceded in death by her father, Panagiotis and her mother, Kiriaki. She is survived by her husband Kostas, her son George (Margaret), her granddaughter Evi, her sisters Sophia and Eleni and many family members.
A private service will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral on May 12, 2021.
