Age 87, of Rancho Cucamonga, California, cherished wife of 68 years to Alben Charles “Chuck” Johnson, passed away February 13, 2019, at home, under the loving care of her remarkably devoted husband. Vyla was born October 27, 1931, in Murray, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah, to Ezra Clarence Thompson and Ivie Rushton.
Vyla graduated from Chaffey High School, Ontario, California. During her high school years, she used her natural artistic talents as an advertising manager and received special recognition for significant contributions to the Chaffey Extravaganza productions. She was a member of the Scholarship Society, and as an active young woman of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, was chosen as queen of the “Gold and Green” ball.
Later in life, Vyla was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, the Fontana Art Association, the Opera Guild, the Red Hat Society, and Brulte Senior Center Silver Sneakers Club. Also, an avid supporter of The Ettie Boys Home for youth.
She married Alben Charles Johnson, September 5, 1950. The marriage was solemnized in the Manti Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ. She is survived by her husband, “Chuck”, sons, Alan, Douglas, Bruce, and daughters, Cheryl and Charlene. She also lovingly nurtured 24 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren.
During her life, her artistic talents brought joy to many. She never did let her special talents rest. Whether it was oil painting or finger painting, sketching or sculpture, singing or hairstyling, or just planning a family party, all activities were enhanced by her remarkable eye for color, form, beauty, and family fun.
The family encourages donations to LDS charities ( ldsp-pay.ldschurch.org ) in Vyla’s name in lieu of flowers.
