Born on February 4, 1963, Jack spent his early years in Cerritos, CA. In 1970, the family relocated to Chino, CA, where Jack grew up working on the family dairy and attended Ontario Christian School, graduating in 1981. Jack relocated to Barstow, CA, living on the family ranch before moving into town in 2022. Jack faced many challenges throughout his life, but he also had moments of kindness and warmth that surfaced even amid his struggles.
Jack was the beloved son of the late John Van Leeuwen and Ietie Van Leeuwen. He is survived by his devoted mother Ietie, his brother Gary Van Leeuwen, and his sisters Martha (Garret) Bootsma and Alice "Ellie" Begley. Jack’s family also includes several nephews, a niece, and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces.
Jack faced many challenges throughout his life, but he remained a person with a kind heart, a passion for tinkering with tools, and a profound love for his pets. Jack had a unique ability to forge friendships and bring warmth to those around him. He would also “hit you up” for a back or neck rub which he loved. His journey was not without its difficulties, but those who knew Jack remember him for his ability to "kid around" and the kindness he extended to others. His struggles, while formidable, were a testament to his enduring spirit and his desire to connect with those he cared about.
A memorial service will be held to celebrate Jack’s life and the impact he had on his loved ones. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a substance abuse support organization, honoring Jack’s memory and the ongoing fight against addiction.
Jack will be remembered for his kindness and the strength he showed in his journey. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
