Theresa Green, beloved wife, adored mother, and loving Nana peacefully passed away on June 21, 2023. She will be remembered for her deep faith in God, devotion to family, lifelong friendships and for her infectious laugh. Theresa had a unique gift for making each grandchild feel as if they were her favorite – always taking a warmhearted interest, sharing advice, and reassuring that if you put your trust in the Lord things would work out as they were meant to be.
Theresa was born on August 30, 1920, in Detroit, Michigan to Anna and Frank Damico. She was the eldest of three daughters. Soon after graduating from St. Catherine High School, Theresa entered St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Detroit and graduated in 1941. As the United States entered World War II, Theresa enlisted in the Army and met the love of her life John R. Green who was also stationed at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Illinois.
Two years later, while on leave, Theresa and John married in Detroit, Michigan. Being married to a career military officer afforded many memorable assignments including being stationed in Japan, Washington D.C., and eventually in San Antonio, Texas. Even though Theresa resigned from the Army upon the arrival of their first child, she never gave up her passion for nursing. She worked in the Emergency Room at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland and in the Intensive Care Unit at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio. Theresa had the distinction of being on the first heart bypass team in San Antonio. Additionally, she assisted in establishing the Intensive Care Unit at Northeast Methodist Hospital in San Antonio when it opened in 1995.
No matter where Theresa and John lived, she always had an active involvement in her church community, her children’s school activities, and her hobbies including sewing, square dancing, and quilting. Each one of her quilts was a labor of love and a treasured gift.
Theresa is preceded in death by her loving husband John and her parents Anna and Frank Damico. She is survived by her two sisters: Rosemary Leone and Frances Orlando as well as her three children: Ann Green Daeke, Janet Green Gerold, husband Frank, John D. Green, wife Kara, six grandchildren: Kirsten Daeke Carlson, Mark Daeke, Frank J. Gerold, Lauren Gerold Priznar, Michael Green, Nicholas Green, and eleven great-grandchildren.
A Catholic Mass celebrating Theresa’s life is scheduled for August 25, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, San Antonio, followed by a private interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of customary remembrances, please consider memorial contributions to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
