She was born on March 29th, 1931 in Angus, Texas, and spent her childhood between Texas and Mississippi. In 1953, she joined the United States Marine Corps, and a year later met and married USMC Gunnery Sergeant Woodrow William Vancil.
She guilelessly led her life as an example of unconditional love. She tended the hearts and minds of any child who came into her life even more closely than the blooms in her garden.
Ruth is survived by her brothers, Sam Pugh and Dan Pugh, her sister, Mary Pugh Silva, her children David Vancil and Carol Tompkins, and her granddaughter Katherine Vancil.
Memorials may be sent to Colonial Funeral Home prior to the service. A memorial dinner will be held on Thursday, May 15th; please contact Katherine for additional details. The graveside service will be held at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on Friday, May 16th at 9am.
