Our beloved Rudolph "Rudy" Perez Mercado was welcomed into the kingdom of heaven on Sunday, December 31, 2017. He died peacefully in his home in Schertz, Texas, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Rudy was born to the late Jim and Irene Mercado on April 26, 1942, in Pflugerville, Texas. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force for 8 years and then went on to graduate in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas at Austin. He became a born-again Christian in 1984 and began to live for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Rudy was blessed with a loving family, whom he cherished. He is survived by his wife, Janie, who he affectionately called the love of his life; children Zelma Mercado, Rene Mercado and wife Darlene, Lauri Williams and husband Scott, and Claudia García and husband Bobby; grandchildren Eric, Michael, and Aaron Mercado, Hannah and Samuel Williams, and Elena García; great-grandchildren Aiden, Silas, and Gavin Mercado; his brothers and sister; as well as cousins and friends, all of whom he loved.
Rudy was strong, kind, and generous, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem. His heart was for the Lord. He was a good and faithful servant that fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. One of his favorite verses was Isaiah 40:31. "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint." He is dearly missed by his loved ones, who celebrate the fact that he is at peace with his creator.
The memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 12 noon at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road in Universal City, Texas.
The family would like to express gratitude to Harbour Hospice and their staff as well as Rudy's oncologist, Dr. Drengler, and his staff. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
