Nell grew up in west Texas, one of nine siblings. She graduated from Plainview High School and attended Wayland College. She met her future husband, Erskine G. Berry Jr, in Amarillo, Texas and they were married in Grand Island, Nebraska in 1944. She then traveled the world with her Air Force husband, living on three different continents and countless Air Force bases in so many countries. After the tragic death of her husband, Col. E. G. Berry Jr., in 1969, she settled in Universal City, Texas where she lived for 53 years. During that time, her house was always open to the “Round Table” for whatever there was to laugh about, cry about, rant and rave about, or love and praise about. Her backyard pool was also open to all, where so many little children learned to swim and also began their love of “Mrs. Berry”.
Nell spent her later years traveling the world and playing golf with John C. Harrington (Col. Ret.) Air Force pilot and family friend.
Nell’s faith in God carried her throughout her life and it is that faith that has carried her to Heaven above, to rejoice with many family members and friends.
Nell Berry will always be remembered for her bright smile, her tenderness for those in need, generous heart, compassion, kindness, and humility. We will continue to carry her light and love in our hearts and take with us the many memories of how she shaped our lives.
She is survived by her son, Erskine G. Berry III; her daughter, Sandra Berry; son-in-law, James Urick; her brother, Rex Shannon; and her sister-in-law, Maxine Shannon, granddaughter Kimberly Boykin, along with many niece and nephews that she loved so dearly.
An interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery where Nell Berry will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband. A Celebration of Life is also being planned.
