Nancy Lynn Shaffer

She was born on October 30, 1938 in Gary, Indiana to Nan Smith and Harry Zumpe. Within a few years, her parents moved back to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where she grew up. Nancy graduated from Slippery Rock College in 1960 with a degree in Elementary Education. She was an elementary school teacher for three years.

In the summer of 1961, Nancy met Clair Shaffer in Jumonville while working as camp group leaders at the Methodist Youth Camp in Pennsylvania. They were married on June 8, 1962. Together they raised three children. Nancy and Clair traveled around the world as Clair served in the United States Air Force. They lived in England, the Philippines, Germany, and various states.

Nancy was a humble, kind-hearted, generous soul. She had many dear friends and volunteered to help whenever, wherever, and however she could. She received a service award for her assistance during Operation Babylift in 1975 while the family lived in the Philippines. She especially enjoyed serving in the women’s group at church and teaching vacation bible school. She was an excellent writer and wrote the most thoughtful letters and cards for every occasion. She was a devoted military wife and mother.

Nancy was a fantastic cross-stitcher. She cross-stitched stockings, wall hangings, pillows, teddy bear pictures, Santas, birth and marriage announcements, along with so many other beautiful items. She shared her love by gifting so many of her creations to family and friends. She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, her computer, and going to concerts. She was an excellent cook. Her recipes from lasagna to (frozen fruit salad) pot roast to red devil's food cake are cherished by all. She loved to watch every type of sport, from basketball with the San Antonio Spurs to figure skating in the Olympics; however, the Pittsburgh Steelers were her favorite team. Her love for the Steelers was passed down to her children and grandchildren.

Nancy has been reunited in heaven with her parents, Nan and Harry Zumpe and her beloved dog, Buffy.

Nancy’s memory forever lives on with her loving husband of 60 (59) years, Clair Shaffer; children, Cheryl Shaffer, Lisa Velez, and Jay Shaffer (Julie); grandchildren, Amanda (Jeremy), Jonathon, Hillary, Alexandra, Miranda (Kevin), Sabrina (Caleb), Evan, Aidan, Nadia, Reagan; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Bowen; sister, Sara Vassallo (Phil) and numerous loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, the Shaffer family asks for teddy bear donations to Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas or any other organization of your choice.
