Lawrence Erward Haworth: “Lieutenant Colonel”; “Army Chaplain”; “Saint 6”; “Black Horse Trooper Chaplain Emeritus” and Thunder Run “Journalist”; Point Man Ministries “Chaplain”; “Author”; “Uncle Larry”; “Larry-Dad”; “G-Pa Larry” (of the many hats/titles he wore with honor)—passed into eternal rest on Monday, August 15, 2022—at the Army Residence Community (ARC) in San Antonio, Texas.
Larry, who was predeceased by his wife of 34 years, Deanna Mary Divine Haworth, has been a resident of the ARC since 2012. Larry served his fellow soldiers as a Chaplain from Vietnam (from 1969-1970 in the 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment) to Germany (1971-1972) to various posts around the United States, and continued well after his Army retirement in 1992, with the 11th Armored Cavalry’s Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia.
Larry authored Tales of Thunder Run: the convoys, the noise, the ambushes: stories of QL 13, the Route 66 of Viet Nam; published 2004, ACW Press, Eugene Oregon.
He also contributed to The Blackhorse Regiment in Vietnam 1966-1972: The Vietnam War in the words of the men who fought it, published 1997 by the 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia.
Larry also served his community, and volunteered for various organizations. Some of his favorites are: Washington for Jesus; Reading the Bible outside of Congress; Point Man Ministries; counselling at the Vietnam Memorial, and other sites; Visiting the Sturgis rally, as well as in assisting the ARC Rotary and Chapel (There are many other organizations that he worked with over the miles).
Larry, b. 14 Feb 1937, was the son of Ival and Marjorie Haworth (both deceased), and was brought up in Reseda, California with his brother Kenneth Haworth (deceased) and sister, Janice Haworth Green. Preceding his death are nieces Dawn Schooley and Kathleen Haworth Canuteson. He is survived by his sister Janice’s kids Gary Schooley and Teri Schooley Califf (and family); brother Kenneth’s kids David Haworth (and family), Michael Haworth (and family), and Kathleen’s family; his great-nieces (and family); and his step-children: Deborah Wojdacz Rollison (and family); Joseph Wojdacz; and Jeffrey Wojdacz.
After retirement, Larry also worked for Fairview Retirement Center near Downer’s Grove, Illinois. They often visited family around the country in their RV’s.
The love of Larry’s life was Deanna, both met in Red River Army Depot in Texarkana, Texas. In marrying, Larry became a father to Deanna’s three children, and a Grandfather to Deborah’s (Debra) children—immediately to Promise and Justis, and later to Israel Rollison.
Larry and Deanna would want their family and friends to know: “God loves you and so do I” and wish to meet you in Heaven for a Life Eternal.
Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 14 at 2:00 PM at Eternal Valley Memorial Park & Mortuary, 23287 N. Sierra Hwy, Newhall, CA 91321. An Inurnment is to follow at 3:00 PM.
