"Colonel John M. Monk Jr, 85, of San Antonio died at 9PM, January 3, 2016 at the Army Residence Community in San Antonio, Texas. He was born October 4, 1930 in Augusta Georgia to John and Opal Monk. He was preceded in death by his wife Yooko whom he met and married in Tokyo, Japan. They had been married for 54 years at the time of her passing in 2010.
Colonel Monk is survived by his two children John and Evelyn and their many children.
Colonel Monk served honorably in the Air Force for 27 years in a career that saw him start in the Chaplain’s Corps, progress through aviation as a navigator/bombardier and end up in command of the communications squadron at Randolph Air Force Base.
Colonel Monk loved many things; chocolate ice cream, opera, peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but the true love of his life was his wife Yooko. He was a devoted husband, always standing steadfast beside his wife during her decade’s long struggle with cancer.
He is finally in the place where he most wanted to be; at home with his wife, enjoying pleasant summer evenings with friends and family, listening to opera and enjoying Yooko’s delicious cooking.
There will be a memorial celebrating Colonel Monk's life at the Army Residence Community on January 15, at 12:30 PM.
