Jack C. Berry

Jack C. Berry, a Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, from Universal City, Texas passed away on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 at N.E. Baptist Hospital surrounded by family and close friends at the age of 88. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on August 4, 1925 to Martin L. and Sarah B. (McAfee) Berry and moved with his parents and brother Gene to Texas in the early 1930's. On August 3, 1943 he entered active military duty with the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Allendale. He was discharged on March 11, 1946 and returned to Randolph AFB as an airplane mechanic for the Dept. of Defense until he was recalled back into the Navy during the Korean War. He received a medical discharge after being knocked overboard and later returned to Randolph AFB to resume his previous position. He married his wife Rebecca in 1976 and helped raise her four daughters. He served in numerous callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints including the position of Head Maintenance Engineer. Jack enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, taking care of his little lhasa apsos and always had a joke or a story to tell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gene, and wife Rebecca. He is survived by his children Pamela Sweeney and Jacqueline Michel; grandson Justin Michel of Arizona; stepdaughters Rebecca Wood, Libit Jones, Annette Knight and Irene Huerta; grandchildren Amber Acuna, Liana Greenberg, Gregory Wood, Phillip Wood, Kailey Huerta and Julianna Huerta of Texas; Amy Lindsey, Kurt Knight and Roman Huerta of Utah; Kami Knight and Abby Huffor of Colorado; numerous great grandchildren; and long time friend Fred Berry. A graveside service with honors will be held Friday, November 29, 2013 at 11:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
