A United States Army veteran of over 27 years, he enlisted in 1951 after first briefly serving as a member of the North Carolina National Guard. His military travels took him through parts of Europe and Asia, including Korea during the Korean War. He was often fond of recounting memories of his work in communications and also of time spent playing clarinet and saxophone while in one of the army’s many bands. Years later, his service would return him to Asia where he would meet and marry the love of his life in Thailand. While stationed at Fort Sam Houston, he retired from the military in 1979 and eventually settled down permanently in the nearby vicinity of San Antonio, Texas, working in federal employment at Randolph Air Force Base until retiring again in 1991.
Gene is survived by Chaem, his wife of nearly 53 years; his daughter, Vipa; his son, Ronald; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His parents and his brother Maurice all precede him in death.
A committal service with military honors for Gene will be held Monday, April 17, 2023, from 2:15 PM to 2:45 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, TX 78209.
