“If I leave here tomorrow,
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
there's too many places
I've got to see.”
And this is true for Don. Right now he and Jon are talking about all of us… well Jon’s talking. Don is flipping back and forth between a random soccer game and the sci-fi network. They are catching up on how the Texans just kicked ass, and much, to Jon’s dismay, the cowboys didn’t. They are reminiscing on the memories, playing classic rock, and the best part, they are both happy.
Don was a businessman, spending decades of his life running Converse Painting. He was a fisherman, not just your average everyday fisherman, he was the ultimate fisherman. If he was in or near the water with a fishing pole in his hand, it was a good day. He was not just a music connoisseur, he was a musician himself. He spent nights with a guitar or banjo in his hand. Name a style of music; Don liked it, had an artist for you to check out, had it on an album, then wanted to discuss it all. He loved being a parent, and really loved being a grandparent. Lee and Elizabeth loved their dad. Evalyn and Samantha loved their grandpa. Phil loved his father-in-law. Leslie and his mother, Vivian, have a lifetime of memories with Don. He loved them so much and they loved him. None of us ever knew what random texts we would wake up to in the morning. Sometimes pictures, sometimes songs, sometimes just an “I love you.”
All that being said, his soul was always that of the hippie that would hitchhike from Texas to California just for a concert.
“I’ll trade all tomorrows, for one single yesterday” as Janis once sang, but we know he will be with us every day.
He is survived by all of his loved ones here with us today and all of the fish that got away.
In lieu of flowers, consider a living plant, a donation to your local animal shelter or Gulf Coast conservation.
A visitation will be held for Don will be held Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road, Universal City, TX 78148, followed by a celebration of life memorial service starting at 2:00 PM.
