He leaves his wife of 60 years, Erika Sanderson, his son, Fred Sanderson and wife Sheri, his daughters: Dolores Lusk and husband Steve, Linda Wenzel and husband Steve, and Shirley Dixon and husband James (deceased), seven (7) grandchildren and eleven (11) great-grandchildren; and many close friends.
Born and raised in Michigan, the son of Russell and Jenny Sanderson. After joining the Army in 1954, he was stationed in Germany where he met and married Erika and was a lifelong resident of San Antonio, Texas.
After serving in the United States Army with two tours in Vietnam and receiving a Bronze Star, he retired after 20 years in 1974. After his retirement from the Army, he began a second career with the San Antonio Kidney Clinic as dialysis nurse for the next twenty-two years. His expertise and reputation gained him respect from both coworkers and his many patients. He always took great pride and responsibility in his work and relished the many friends he made at work. After his second retirement from the San Antonio Kidney Clinic in 1997, Chuck and Erika enjoyed traveling to Silver City, New Mexico to visit with lifelong friends and countless trips to South Padre Island, Texas enjoying the company of his friends, family, and the solitude of sunsets, fishing and the beach.
Visitation will be Monday, September 4, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Rd. in Universal City, Texas. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Colonial Funeral Home beginning at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery with full military honors. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
