Charles was born to Odell and Lenora Kerr on December 23, 1944 in Weslaco, TX. His family moved to Odessa, TX where he attended Odessa High School. Upon finishing his education, Charles entered military service, where he completed two tours stationed in Korea and Vietnam for the United States Army.
After his military service, Charles began truck driving cross country. As an owner/operator, Charles drove under the name of RCMJ Trucking, so named for his four children. During his 40+ years of truck driving, Charles won several awards including the Million Mile Award from Pacer Transport and a safety award from Hill & Hill Trucking in the form of a belt buckle that he proudly wore for decades until the day he passed. He traveled all across North America until retiring shortly before the age of 70 in 2014.
Charles met his wife, Linda in the fall of 1980. At the time, Linda was employed at a Montgomery Wards truck tire center in San Antonio that Charles visited as a customer. He saw Linda and immediately asked her boss if he could take her out for a date. Four months later, they married on February 23, 1981 and were together the rest of their lives.
Always thinking of his family, Charles collected items for loved ones while on the road. Whether it be countless rolls of fabrics, a spindly legged sewing machine, reams of baseball cards, or wind chime bells from New Mexico, these and other unusual items exemplified his quirk, thoughtfulness, and generous humor. Charles will be remembered for his good-natured spirit and his love for long chats by phone, giant dogs, and flashy pearl snap shirts.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Gordy of Austin, TX; sons, Charles Kerr of Gonzales, TX, Mathew Kerr and daughter-in-law Karee of Converse, TX and James Kerr of Converse, TX; grandchildren, Charlotte Inez Gordy (7) and Kolton Charles Hugh Kerr (6). He is also survived by his brother Wayne Kerr of Altus, OK and sister Deborah Lujan of Odessa, TX. He is predeceased by his wife Linda Jeanne.
