She was born to Anna M. Westfall and T. H. Powell on Feb 16, 1940 in Flint, Michigan. She was the youngest of four girls and a boy. Her family relocated to the San Antonio area in the early 1950s. In 1957, she graduated from Harlandale HS and then went to work for USAA. She married and soon assumed her greatest role as a mother to her children, Jimmy and Venay. She was the consummate homemaker that still found time to participate in her children’s activities. She served as PTA president, Brownie Troop leader, sports mom, and drill team mom. In 1970, she married her second husband Glenn Roland, the love of her life.
Barbara was a woman that possessed many, varied talents. She was an avid reader and loved puzzles of all types. Her favorite passion was arts and crafts. In her craftsroom, she created ceramics, paintings, and decorations of all types. She was an excellent seamstress who also loved crocheting. Examples of these were displayed throughout her house. She loved celebrating all holidays, but her favorite was Christmas. The house would be filled with crafted decorations, nutcrackers, an ornate Christmas tree, beautifully wrapped presents, and her carefully decorated Christmas cookies. She loved to attend the many large family gatherings and spent hours on the phone staying in touch with her siblings and children. She will always be remembered for her loving heart and her witty, sassy sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and T. H. Powell; her husband, Glenn Roland; her sisters, Helen Rice and Juanita Fields, and her brother Bill Powell. She is survived by her sister Bernice Weimers; her son, Jimmy Walker and his wife Michele Coe-Walker; their children, Justin Walker, Trevor Walker, Blair Walker, Amanda Walker. She is also survived by her daughter, Venay Friedrichsen, and her daughter, Stephanie Hartman, her husband, Levi Hartman and her great granddaughter Hadlee; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
A special thanks to all of the friends and caregivers at Fresenius Dialysis and Suncrest Hospice for always taking such good care of her.
